PBP 2016, Dedicated to the lives and legacies of Josephine Baker and James Baldwin

2016, TRIBUTE TO

baldwin 4

James Baldwin was born the in Harlem, New York and was the eldest of nine children.  As a youth Baldwin began to feel stifled by being both an African American in a racist society, and a gay man in the homophobic African American community. At the age of 24 Baldwin moved to France.  While in France Baldwin became an avid writer and poet. With the encouragement of his best friend and lover Lucien Happersberger, he published a number of poems and novels. He also made valuable contributions to the African American Civil Rights Movement.

Josephine Baker was born in a black slum area of St. Louis in 1906. She was captivating audiences in Paris as an entertainer and achieved acclaim as the 20th century’s first international black female sex symbol by the mid-1930’s. She reveled in her seductiveness onstage and off, living a life that was the very stuff of legend and rumor. Over thirty years after her death in 1975, her name still evokes a sense of glamour and trails an aura of sexuality.
